Managing The Time When Attempting Short
Conversations In The Listening Section Of The TOEIC
Every test has a fixed number of questions that must
be answered within a time frame that is pre-
determined. The Listening Test in the TOEIC Test too
is time bound and every test taker has 45 minutes in
which to answer 100 questions. Out of the set of 100
questions, there is the Short Conversation section
which has 30 questions. So time management here is
very important and can influence the result of the
test either way.
Challenges in the Short Conversation Test
Firstly the candidate being a non-native speaker of
English and is not expected to have a high level of
proficiency. Hence the examinee has to learn and
practice the test many times before actually taking
it. The test needs to be practiced well and
listening to a lot of English is one way to practice
it so that you are able to understand the
conversation. Being familiar with the various
accents, the different pronunciations and the
diction is essential to be quick with the answers
within the given time frame. But with adequate
practice prior to the test this challenge can be
overcome to a great extent. But what makes the
challenge more severe is that of time management.
Time Management Quickly Read the Instructions:
Try to quickly read the instructions as you might
already be familiar with the instructions and the
format. This will save up a few precious minutes for
Try to Grasp the Main Topic and the Keyword in the
talk and the question.
By doing so you can easily identify the context in
which it is spoken and also locate the right option.
Identify The Tense In The Question
This is one strategy that will help you to narrow
down your options to just one or two. By identifying
the tense in the conversation as well as the
question and by the process of elimination, you can
easily choose the right option.
Draw a relation between words in the question and
those in the responses
One method that works almost every time is to draw a
relation between the speakers in the conversation,
the location and the situation. Since in most cases
the TOEIC Test is a simulation of real life work
place setting this relationship can be identified
Plan Time Saving Strategies:
The total time of 45 minutes needs to be assigned in
such a way that the Short Conversations Test is
given its allotted time. It would be a good idea to
read the options first and as you listen to the
conversation, you would be able to identify the
right option. Allot only 10-12 seconds for each
answer and if you have not understood the question
or the any of the options, then either make a guess
or just let it pass and go on to the next question.
At times it might just click later.
