managing the time when attempting Fill-in the Blanks
in the Reading section of the TOEIC test.
Irrespective of what the test is, a thorough
practice prior to the test is necessary to ensure a
high score. This is especially true when the test is
time bound like the TOEIC Test. The reading test
allows only 75 minutes for the 100 questions that
you need to answer. Out of the set of 100 questions,
there is the Fill-in the Blanks section which has 12
questions. So time management here is very important
and can influence the result of the test either way.
Challenges in the Fill-in the Blanks Test
Firstly the candidate being a non-native speaker of
English may not have a high level of proficiency.
Hence a thorough practice for the test before
actually taking it is highly necessary. The
knowledge of grammatical conventions and rules, the
appropriate use of phrases and the level of
vocabulary are some of the challenges that the test
taker confronts and which can be overcome only by
practice and study. Apart from these challenges it
is the challenge of time management that makes the
test all the more complicated and difficult.
The total time of 75 minutes needs to be allocated
judiciously. The Fill-in the Blanks Test should be
given slightly more time than the Incomplete
Sentences as the options can be more confusing. It
would be a good idea to read the options first and
as you read the passage you would know naturally
which word is suitable. Allot a little more than
10-12 seconds for each answer. If you find a
question difficult to answer skip over to the next
so that you donít waste time on a single question.
An effective strategy might be to just skim through
the test paper and attempt all the questions you are
confident about. This will help you save up on time.
Making a guess is another strategy you can adopt at
the end of the test when you review your paper
Clocking your practice tests
Maintaining a spreadsheet in which you note down
your time clocked in each practice test would be a
good idea. In fact if it is possible it would be
good to note down the time taken for each question.
This will give you a fair idea as to how much time
is needed for the test as a whole and for each
